Slab City for TIME

Slab City, near Niland, California and between Palm Springs and San Diego, is a desolate place in the desert that used to be owned by the government and is now best known for Salvation Mountain, a hill painted by Leonard Knight. The buildings were removed long ago leaving just the concrete slabs. Summer temperatures reach 120, so it's a special breed that call the place home.
